Cookbooks

In one of my holiday posts, I lauded The America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook.  Since then, several friends have told me that they also love this tome.  Because I know this is a reliable cooking reference, filled with the answers to darn near every cooking question,  I've given it as a gift on several occasions.

But I don't want to turn into a one-trick pony when it comes to cookbooks.  Do you guys have a favorite that I should check out?

  1. I don't mind scanning recipes with cool whip and jello, so I often seek out a good church cookbook. You will find tasty comfort food proud to be on any potluck table. My favorite is the the mid-50's addition of the Mary and Martha Circle Cookbook from Rockford (IL). I enjoy the recipes with instructions such as "bake until done" or ingredients like "10 cents worth of almonds." And don't we all know what a #2 can of pineapple is? The names of contributors are from a different era: Mrs. Gunner Swenson or Mrs. Alex Holmgren.

  2. I love all the Nordstrom cookbooks. The recipes are a shift from ordinary, and don't contain too many ingredients. I am always satisfied with anything I make, and it usually becomes a dish I add to the "repertoire."

  3. First, I love your blog! You are hilarious and your food is yummy! As for cookbooks, my latest favorite is "The Pioneer Woman Cooks". The pictures are beautiful and the food is awesome (not low fat though so I don't cook her recipes every day). Her website is wonderful, easy to find good recipes, and pretty to look at! My mouth waters when I look at her pics!

  4. Anonymous 1 and 2, thanks for the tips! I love the Rockford wives' names. And, Dawn, I'm glad you like HDHH! :-) I loooove The Pioneer Woman's website, so I'll have to check out her book, too.

  5. I have a dozen or so cookbooks that I reference on a regular basis, and none has served me as well as Cook Yourself Thin. Every dish I've made from the book has been fantastic. The twice baked sweet potatoes were such a hit that my husband and I renamed them "Orange Lovers Delight." They are orange. Delightful. And we are lovers.

P.S. I really did lose about a dress size cooking from this book, as it promises.
